Step 3 - Priming
We can not paint directly onto bare metal or plastic, and instead, a "primer" is sprayed on first.
This grey layer then does two things:
- It bonds strongly to the metal / plastic to prevent rust and peeling.
- It creates a smooth, neutral surface for the colour to sit on.
Then once the primer is dry, it is sanded again with very fine sandpaper to make it glass-smooth, ready for painting.
Step 4 - Colour Matching and Mixing
This is where the skill comes in, as our Mercedes-trained technician will take your paint code (e.g., 775 Iridium Silver) and mix the paint.
However, they can not simply apply it ot the car, as paint on a car can fade slightly over time due to the sun's UV rays.

This, in essence, can "trick" the eye, and if they just painted a hard square patch, you would see the difference instantly. However, by fading the new colour into the old, the join becomes invisible.
Step 6 - The Lacquer, or the Clear Coat
Now, here the base coat dries to a dull, matte finish. As aresult, it needs the clear coat added (lacquer) to make it shine and protect it.
This clear liquid is then sprayed over the top of the colour, and on a Mercedes, this is where the quality really shows.
As the clear coat must be applied smoothly to match the "orange peel" (the natural texture) of the rest of the car. For instance, if it is too flat or too textured, it will stand out obviously, which you won't want.
This layer then seals the repair, making it waterproof and UV-resistant as a result.
Step 7 - Curing and Polishing
The paint then needs to harden.
